Surgical orthodontics, or orthognathic surgery, is a specialized orthodontic treatment used to address severe cases involving improper bites, jaw bone issues, and malocclusion.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of the nine recognized dental specialties, focusing on complex craniofacial conditions that affect the mouth, jaw, face, and skull. If surgery is required, your orthodontist will collaborate with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to ensure you receive the best possible care.
Surgical orthodontics is only suitable when the jaw structure is almost or fully developed. For females, this usually occurs around age 16, while males typically need to be 19 or 20 years old. Thus, surgical orthodontics is generally for adult patients dealing with bite issues or concerns about their facial appearance. However, younger patients whose jaw structure isn’t fully mature can still undergo non-surgical treatments, such as braces.
Your orthodontist can evaluate your case during your consultation and determine whether orthognathic surgery is necessary based on the alignment and severity of your jaw condition.
Our orthodontists will work closely with a trusted oral surgeon to ensure that your orthodontic treatment and surgery are seamlessly coordinated for optimal results.
We understand that surgery can be daunting for many patients, which is why we’ll arrange an appointment with the oral surgeon early in your orthodontic treatment. During this meeting, the surgeon will explain the details of the procedure and address any concerns you may have. Your treatment will begin with braces, which our orthodontists will closely monitor and adjust. About two-thirds of the way through your treatment, you will be scheduled for surgery.
The full recovery process typically takes 1-2 months, during which time we will see you regularly to monitor your progress and address any issues. However, most patients are able to return to work or school just 2 weeks after the surgery or even sooner.
Braces are generally removed 3 to 6 months after surgery, and you'll notice significant improvements in both your dental health and your smile!
Orthognathic surgery has been successfully performed for many years in dental practices and hospitals, but as with any major medical procedure, there are some risks involved. If you have any concerns about undergoing this treatment, please don’t hesitate to contact our practice. We’re happy to answer your questions and provide more information. Your comfort and peace of mind are our top priority.
For many patients, the most rewarding benefit of orthognathic surgery is achieving a beautiful, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime. Whether you’re addressing a bad bite, malocclusion, or jaw abnormalities, orthognathic surgery can significantly improve your quality of life, boost your confidence, and leave you with a smile to be proud of for many years to come.
